How to know if you need to see a psychologist: 10 signs

You don't have to "hit rock bottom" or have a serious problem to see a psychologist. If something has been weighing on you for a while, these signs will help you know if it's time to ask for help.

A simple rule

Consider seeing a psychologist when a distress lasts weeks, keeps coming back or interferes with your daily life (work, relationships, sleep, mood). You don't need to be "very unwell": the sooner you ask, the simpler the process usually is.

10 signs it would help to see a psychologist

They don't all have to apply. If you recognise yourself in several, it's worth consulting:

  1. A distress that won't pass. Sadness, emptiness or low mood most days.
  2. Anxiety is with you daily. Constant worry, tension or even anxiety crises.
  3. Emotions overwhelm you. You get angry, cry or lose control more than you'd like.
  4. You sleep or eat worse. Insomnia, waking up or notable appetite changes.
  5. You've been switching off. You no longer enjoy what you used to and struggle to feel motivated.
  6. The same problems repeat. In your relationships or at work, you fall into the same pattern.
  7. You're carrying a loss or a blow. Grief, a break-up or a trauma that won't settle.
  8. You reach for "patches". Alcohol, food, shopping or screens to avoid feeling.
  9. You struggle to function. Work, studies or daily life feels like too much.
  10. You've tried alone and aren't moving forward. You go round in circles and stay stuck.

You don't have to be "very unwell"

One of the biggest myths is that therapy is only for serious crises. Seeing a psychologist also helps you know yourself better, make a big decision, manage stress or simply look after yourself preventively. You don't wait for a huge cavity to see the dentist.

How can I help you?

See what I treat

If you have thoughts of suicide or of harming yourself, ask for help now. In Spain you can call 024, free and confidential 24 hours a day, or 112 in an emergency. You're not alone.

How to take the first step

Taking the step is easier than it seems. You can start with a first orientation session, where you say what's happening, clear up your doubts and decide, with no obligation, whether to continue. You don't need to have it all worked out beforehand: that's what the psychologist is for.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my problem is "big enough"?

If something causes you distress, that's enough. There are no problems that are "too small": what matters is how it affects you.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the person and what you want to work on. Many people notice improvement within a few weeks. In the first session a realistic estimate is made.

Will the psychologist judge me?

No. Their job is to support you without judgement and help you see things with perspective, in a confidential, safe space.
