Psychologist or psychiatrist? The two are often confused, but they do different (and complementary) things. Knowing who does what helps you turn to the right professional.
In one line
The psychologist does therapy: they help you understand and change what's happening through talking and tools. The psychiatrist is a medical doctor and can prescribe medication. In many cases, they work together.
What a psychologist does
A psychologist is a professional trained in human behaviour and emotions. Through therapy (talking, understanding and practical tools) they help you work through anxiety, depression, relationship problems, grief, self-esteem and much more. A psychologist does not prescribe medication: they work on the causes and give you resources for change.
What a psychiatrist does
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor specialised in mental health. Their focus is more biological and, crucially, they can prescribe medication (such as antidepressants or anxiolytics) and manage more severe clinical conditions.
So who should you see?
As a general guide:
- Start with a psychologist if you want to work through what's happening, understand yourself better or manage anxiety, low mood, relationship or life difficulties.
- A psychiatrist is advisable when medication may be needed, or in more severe conditions.
- Both together is very common: the psychiatrist manages medication and the psychologist does the therapy. They complement each other.
Not sure where to start?
If you're unsure, we can look at it together in a first orientation session, with no obligation.
Do I need medication?
Not always. Many difficulties improve with therapy alone. When medication is needed, it's prescribed by a doctor, and combining it with therapy usually gives the best results: the medication can ease symptoms while therapy works on the underlying causes.
The important thing: don't stay stuck
Whether you start with a psychologist or a psychiatrist, what matters is not to put off asking for help. If you're unsure, a psychologist can guide you and, if needed, suggest a medical assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Can a psychologist prescribe medication?
No. In Spain, only doctors (including psychiatrists) can prescribe medication. A psychologist works through therapy and, if they consider medication may help, will suggest you see a doctor.
Can I see both at the same time?
Yes, and it's very common. The psychiatrist manages the medication and the psychologist does the therapy. Ideally the two professionals coordinate for the best results.
Which is more effective?
It's not about which is better, but what you need. For many difficulties, therapy is very effective on its own; in other cases, medication or a combination of both works best.
